Summer, summer, come at last!
Sturdy bunching onions growing tall and fast.
Green tomatoes on the vine struggle to redden and
nourish our bodies that yearn for the fresh fruits and
vegetables of the season. Cucumber beetle, go away! and
leave my plants to grow. We do not want you here about,
withering the fruits and robbing us of the rewards of our labor.
Meager fare at the farmer's market has kept us wishing for
healthy blooms and vine ripened foods, and
the meager size of
this year's garden is no
cause for celebration.
Life is so much more
keenly felt when the living
is so close to the soil.
